Origin & History of Dev Diwali

The festival is celebrated in the Hindu month of Kartika, known as Diwali of the Gods. It is celebrated on Kartik Poornima when the moon shines brightest. This holy day is usually observed after 15 days of Diwali. 

Dev Deepawali is celebrated to celebrate Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura. In Hindu mythology, Tripurasura is believed to have reigned over the three realms and instilled fear in people. 

God Shiva, unable to endure the demon’s tyranny, took it upon himself to defeat him. Lord Shiva descended from the Ganges River and immersed himself in the holy water to commemorate his victory.

Dev Diwali at Varanasi

Banaras dev deepawali is celebrated to guide the Gods and Goddesses to the sacred water of the Ganges. During the festivity of Varanasi’s Dev Diwali, the city’s people decorate the steps of the Ghats with earthen lamps or diyas. All the houses near the pier are adorned with colourful lighting.

The ghats are decorated with elaborate rangoli designs. People perform the ritual of floating small lamps wrapped in leaves in the water. Visitors can rent boats to get the best panoramic views of all the Ghats. Laser shows are organised, and a breathtaking fireworks show is hosted on the banks of the river.

Before the diyas are lit, Pandits of all the Ghats perform Ganga Arati simultaneously. Women pandits can be seen participating in this Arati. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges and visiting the Kashi Viswanath Temple are good signs on this day.

From Assi Ghat in the south corner to the most famous Dasaswamedh Ghat, it offers a divine experience. Except for the Manikarnika Ghat and Harish Chandra Ghat, the two burning ghats on Varanasi, every other Ghat will participate in this occasion.

Difference Between Diwali and Dev Diwali

Diwali marks Shree Ram’s return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Meanwhile, Dev Diwali is celebrated to worship Lord Shiva’s victory against the evil Tripurasura.

After defeating the demon, it is believed God came to the earth to bathe in the Ganges of Vanarasi. Dev Deepavali is celebrated 15 days after the Diwali festival.
