Fred Grotenhuis, a local balloonist and resident of Harmony Township, approached the organizers in 2001 about adding balloon rides as a new attraction. In the first year, 15 balloonists attended the county fair from Wednesday to Saturday. The number of balloonists increased as time passed; this became an annual tradition at the fair.
