Kumartuli Sarbojanin Durga Puja is the worship of Goddess Durga in Kumartuli, the famous potter’s hub in North Kolkata, where clay idols are manufactured for different festive occasions.

The puja was back in 1931 when the Kumartuli Sarbojanin Durgotsav Committee Puja was organized for the first time. However, only 7 years later – in 1938- the first creative idol was worshipped during the Puja ceremony. That year, the Puja committee chose renowned Indian nationalist, socialist and one of India’s most influential freedom fighters, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, as its President.

The Kumartuli celebrations of Durga Puja are similar to those in other parts of Bengal. A terrible fire threatened the worship ceremony sometime after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose became the President of the Kumartuli Puja committee. The Puja would have stopped, but Bose proposed changing the Panchchala form of worship instead of the Ekchala form.

This tradition is still observed in the modern ‘Theme Puja’. Social and political situations and events are often reflected in the appearance of the idols and the overall look and feel of the pandals here. The festivities are held yearly, and Kumartuli wears a festive look during the Durga Puja. With lights, songs, rituals, new dresses, flowers and more, the occasion is celebrated grandly.

Kumartuli is situated at Hatkhola, near the Baghbazar area, in North Kolkata, near Sovabazar Ferry Ghat. Reach it via the Sovabazar Launch Ghat, located nearby. A ferry ride along the river Ganges is memorable.

To reach by Metro, get down at the Sovabazar metro station. Kumartuli is at walking distance from the Sovabazar metro station gate.
To reach by train, – Bagbazar railway station under the circular railway is the nearest.
By Ferry: Bagbazar ghat and Kumartuli ghat are the nearest launch ghat.
