2. Bangiya Sanskriti Samsad, Congress Bhavan, Shivaji Nagar

Bangiya Sanskriti Samsad has been hosting Durga Puja for the past 78 years, starting in 1939-1940. Every year, the people of Pune flock to this pandal site because of its rich heritage and gorgeous decorations.

4. Anandam Association, Salunkhe Vihar

Anandam Association is one of Pune’s most prominent Bengali associations, located at Salunkhe Vihar. The Association started the puja with a few families in 1995, and it has now become the most popular Puja pandal site in Pune.

7. Bengalee Association Mauli Garden Pune

Since its inception about 40 years ago, the Association celebrates the festival of joy yearly. Formed by a few Bengali families missing home in Pune, the Bengalee Association is a cultural group for the Bengalis in Pune.

Durga Puja events

There are several events associated with this puja; they are:

Bodhan

It’s the ritual of the awakening of Goddess Durga. This custom is believed to be started by Lord Rama before his fight with Ravana. It’s also known as Akalbodhon and is performed on Shashti evening in all the puja mandaps.

Nabapatrika Snan

It happens on Saptami morning. A banana tree, which is mythically believed to be Lord Ganesha’s wife, is bathed. Before the ritual, the banana tree or Kalabou is decorated as a married Bengali woman draped in a saree. This ritual is essentially for the good fortune of farmers as It’s supposed to provide a healthy cropping season.

Sandhi Puja

The Sandhi puja is an important ritual of Durga Puja. It happens at the end of Ashtami and the beginning of Nabami, i.e., during the intersection or sandhi of the two days. It’s customary to offer 108 lotuses and light 108 candles for Goddess Durga during this custom.

Kumari Puja

In this custom, a little girl is dressed up as Goddess Durga and worshipped. According to religious experts, the young girl is treated as a human incarnation of the goddess. The sacred institution of Belur Math is the pioneer of this custom.

Sindur Khela

On the day of Bijoya Dashami, when It’s time to bid farewell, the women gear up for Sindur Khela. It signifies a glorifying departure of Durga with women applying sindoor or vermillion on the cheeks of other women.

Visarjan

Vijaya Dashami or vissarjan is the last ritual of durga puja. Devi Durga is now going back to Kailasa again. In India, the idols are immersed in the holy Ganga.
