About Durga Puja festival

Durga Puja is one of the most important festivals for Bengalis, and it’s a 10-days event. The festivities begin on the day of Mahalaya. On this day, Goddess Durga comes to earth from her mythological home Kailash.

Most important days of Durga puja

The sixth day (Sashthi), when the pandals are officially inaugurated, and the festivities begin.

On the seventh (Saptami), eighth (Ashtami), and ninth (Navami) day, goddess Durga along with goddess Lakshmi, Saraswathi, and god Ganesha Kartikeya is worshipped.

The tenth day (Vijaya Dashami) is the festivals last day. On this day, the married women put sindoor (vermillion) on the idols and then play with sindoor by smearing it on one another. They ask for a blissful married life as a blessing. It is believed that on the tenth day, Goddess Durga goes back to Kailash Parvat with family.

People immerse the idols in the holy Ganga with a heavy heart and wait for the goddess to return next year. With this, the festival of Durga Puja ends.

Though it is an important festival for Bengali and all over the globe, celebrate this festival grandly.
