About Durga Puja festival

Durga Puja is one of the most important festivals for Bengalis, and it’s a 10-day event. The festivities begin on the day of Mahalaya. On this day, Goddess Durga comes to earth from her mythological home Kailash.

UNESCO for the Intangible Cultural Heritage
Intangible Cultural Heritage – UNESCO

Most important days of Durga puja

The sixth day (Sashthi), when the pandals are officially inaugurated, and the festivities begin.

On the seventh (Saptami), eighth (Ashtami), and ninth (Navami) day, goddess Durga along with goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswathi, and god Ganesha Kartikeya is worshipped.

The tenth day (Vijaya Dashami) is the festival’s last day. On this day, the married women put sindoor (vermillion) on the idols and then play with sindoor by smearing it on one another. They ask for a blissful married life as a blessing. It is believed that on the tenth day, Goddess Durga goes back to Kailash Parvat with her family.

People immerse the idols in the holy Ganga with a heavy heart and wait for the goddess to return next year. With this, the festival of Durga Puja ends.

Though it is an important festival for Bengali and all over the globe, celebrate this festival grandly.

Conclusion

Whenever we Bengalis close our eyes, we see the beautiful idol of the goddess Durga. Whenever we listen, we always hear mesmerizing Dhak music. “Maa Asche” is our favourite phrase.

We wait for an entire year to welcome Maa Durga, and when she goes back, nothing feels good. We only hope that Maa will come again next year, and her blessings will be there with us forever and ever.
