Kumartuli Sarbojanin Durga Puja History
The Kumartuli Sarbojanin Durgotsav Committee first started it. Seven years later, in 1938, the Puja committee chose Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a renowned Indian nationalist and socialist and one of India’s most influential freedom fighters, as its President.
The Puja would have stopped, but Bose proposed changing the Panchchala form of worship instead of the Ekchala form.
This tradition is still observed in the modern ‘Theme Puja’. Social and political situations and events are often reflected in the appearance of the idols and the overall look and feel of the pandals here. The festivities are held yearly, and Kumartuli wears a festive look during the Durga Puja. The occasion is celebrated grandly with lights, songs, rituals, new dresses, flowers, and more.
