Sree Pareshnath Jain Temple, Kolkata, is a pilgrimage site for Jains. It is located in Badridas Temple St (Gouribari), northeast of Kolkata, close to the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad bus stop.
There are two famous Calcutta Jain temples between Shaymbazar and Maniktala. One is Sree Pareshnath Jain Temple / Sitalanathji Jain Temple, and the other is Digambar Jain Temple.

Pareshnath Temple Kolkata

The temple’s named Pareshnath, but it belongs to Sree Sheetalnath Ji (10th), one of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras (Holy scholars). The temple was built in 1867 by Roy Badridas Bahadur Mukim (রাউ বদ্রীদাস বাহাদুর মুকিম). After him, the street (Badridas Temple Road ) was named after him.

There are four (4) temples in this area.
- The main temple was dedicated to Shitalnathji. He was the 10th Jain Tirthankara. He is situated in the main temple.
- South of the main temple was the Chandra Prabhuji temple.
- The footsteps of Jain Dadaji Garu and Kushalji Maharaj are worshipped on the right side of the main temple.
- On the north side of the temple is Mahavira’s temple, the last guru of the Jains.
Pareshnath temple design
In the main temple, a ghee lamp has been burning continuously since 1867, in honour of the Jain Avatar (incarnation of God) Sri Sitalanath Ji. When you visit the main temple, you can see the diamond adorning the forehead of the main idol, Sitalanathji.
Along with the interior, the Pareshnath Temple Kolkata compound is gorgeous, with a beautiful garden. It is decorated with glass mosaic blocks and silver-plated European statues. A wide variety of flowers surrounds the garden.
There are many fountains and a well-maintained reservoir, where you can see colourful fish swinging here and there. Visitors are amazed to view the white-marbled images, the engraving work on crystals, diamonds, rubies, pearls, corals, and many other valuable metals, coloured glass, and the delicate architectural beauty of the temple.
The interior features high-quality mirrors and glass. This temple’s ceiling is decorated with a Beautiful chandelier. The floor is decorated with marble and glass—the delicate flower designs offer a vibrant look at this vast architecture.
The temple wall is decorated with a painting by the famous artist Ganesh Muskare. The entire area is adorned with beautiful gardens, fountains, tanks, coloured fish, and stone images, creating a heavenly environment.

- On Rash Purnima day, grand processions are taken out from the temple.
- The temple celebrates Paryushan in Bhadrav month. This year, 2019, Paryushana will begin on Tuesday, August 27, and end on Tuesday, September 3.

Sree Parshwanath Digambar Jain Upaban temple is near Shayambazar, Belgachiya. Visitors are not allowed. Only people of the Jain religion, which has two branches: one here and the other in Svetambara, can visit at any time.
Digambar Jain temple was built in 1914 in Kolkata. The Jain Bhawan in Kolkata is a holy place for the Jain community. The Digambar Jain temple has a glorious, bright red temple and entrance gate that welcomes pilgrims to the temple premises.

History of Sri Digambar Jain Parasnath Temple in Calcutta
Sri Digambar Jain Baghwan Parasnath temple is a famous temple in Kolkata. This temple was renovated by the famous Mr Brown, the architect of the Victoria Memorial, in 1914.
The temple’s architectural style is Nagara, with ornamental pillars and beautiful sculptures inspired by ancient Jain temples and cave architecture.
In 1914, the Jain Tirthankar Paraswanath idol was in the main temple. Tirthankar Paraswanath is the 23rd Jain Tirthankara (877-777 BC).
The 81-foot-high standard pillar (Stamva) was recently erected and carved from pure white marble. A Jain Museum of Art, Architecture, and Culture will also soon open the spacious hall of the standard pillars.

Kartik Purnima is a grand festival of Lord Jain Tirthankar Paraswanath. It is celebrated every year on the holy day of Kartik Purnima, and thousands of Jain devotees from all over India are present to celebrate this occasion. A traditional grand procession is also held every year, dating back 190 years and still held with great respect.
Under the colourful procession, the rugged images of Bhagwan Parshvanath are captured, and thousands of devotees are in front of the band singing a bhajan. This huge procession runs through the city’s main roads, enabling many devotees to glimpse the holy God and find his blessing.
Jains are India’s largest religious community, and their manuscript libraries are among the oldest in the country. Jainism is a religious minority in India, with 4.2 million followers.
