Sree Pareshnath Jain Temple Kolkata is the pilgrim place for the Jains. It’s located in Badridas Temple St (Gouribari), to the North-East of Kolkata, close to Bangiya Sahitya Parishad bus stoppage.

There is two famous Calcutta Jain temple between Shaymbazar to Maniktala. One is Sree Pareshnath Jain Temple / Sitalanathji Jain temple, and another is Digambar Jain Temple.

Pareshnath temple Kolkata West Bengal

The temple name is Pareshnath, and it is the temple of Sree Sheetalnath Ji (10th), one of 24 Jain Tirthankar (Holy scholars). The temple was built in 1867 by Roy Badridas Bahadur Mukim (রাউ বদ্রীদাস বাহাদুর মুকিম). After, this street (Badridas Temple Road ) was named in his name.

There are four (4) temples in this area.

  1. The main temple was dedicated to Shitalnathji. Who was the 10th Jain Tirthankara. He is situated in the main temple.
  2. On the south of the main temple was Chandra Prabhuji temple.
  3. On the right side of the main temple, Jain Dadaji Garu and Kushalji Maharaj’s footsteps are worshiped.
  4. On the north side of the temple is Mahavira’s temple, the last guru of the Jain’s.

Pareshnath temple design

In the main temple, a ghee lamp burns in front of the Jain Avatar (incarnation of God) Sri Sitalanath Ji, continuously burning from 1867. When you visit the main temple, you can see the diamond which adorns the forehead of the main idol Sitalanathji.

Along with the interior, the Pareshnath Temple Kolkata compound is gorgeous, with a beautiful garden. It is decorated with blocks of glass mosaics and silver-plated European statues. A wide variety of flowers surrounds the garden.

There are many fountains and a well-maintained reservoir, where you can see colourful fish swinging here and there. Visitors are amazed to view the white-marbled images, engraving work of crystals, diamonds, rubies, pearls, corals, and many other valuable metals, coloured glasses, and the delicate architectural beauty of the temple.

The interior of the Pareshnath Jain Bhawan Kolkata is designed with high-quality mirrors and glasses. This temple’s ceiling is decorated with a Beautiful chandelier (ঝাড়বাতি). The floor is decorated with marble and pieces of glass—the delicate flower designs on the floor, which provide an enthusiastic look at this vast architecture.

The temple wall is decorated with the painting of famous artist Ganesh Muskare. The whole area cover with beautiful gardens, fountains, tanks, coloured fishes, and stone images, and everything has made the entire environment heavenly.

  • On Rash Purnima day, grand processions are taken out from the temple.
  • The temple celebrates Paryushan in Bhadrav month. This year 2019, Paryushana will begin on Tuesday, August 27, and ends on Tuesday, September 3.

Digambar Jain Temple in Kolkata

Sree Parshwanath Digambar Jain Upaban temple is near Shayambazar, Belgachiya. It’s not allowed for everyone to visit. Only the Jain religion of people visits anytime. Jain religion has two branches. One is here, and another is Svetambara.

Digambar Jain temple was built in 1914 in Kolkata. The Jain Bhawan Kolkata is a holy place for the Jain community. Digambar Jain temple has a glorious bright red temple and entrance gate, welcoming pilgrims to the temple premises.

This temple is surrounded by four gardens, trees, and a variety of flowers. In this natural environment, pilgrims can take a rest and feel the unity of nature. Pilgrims can feed hundreds of fish in the fish reservoir.

History of Sri Digambar Jain Parasnath Temple in Calcutta

Sri Digambar Jain Baghwan Parasnath temple is a famous and historical temple in Kolkata. Once this temple was renovated by the famous Mr. Brown, architect of the Victoria Memorial, in 1914.

The temple’s architectural style is Nagara style with ornamental pillars and beautiful sculptures inspired by ancient Jain temples and caves architecture.

In 1914 the idol of the Jain Tirthankar Paraswanath was situated in the main temple.
Tirthankar Paraswanath is 23rd Jain Tirthankara (877-777 BC). The 81-foot-high standard pillar (Stamva) was built with pure white marble, which was recently established. A Jain Museum of art, architecture, and culture will also be coming soon, which will open the spacious hall of the standard pillars.

Kartik Purnima is a grand festival of Lord Jain Tirthankar Paraswanath. It is celebrated every year on the holy day of Kartik Purnima, and thousands of Jain devotees from all over India are present to celebrate this occasion. A traditional grand procession is taken out every year, which was started 190 years ago and is still running with great respect.

Under the colourful procession, the rugged images of Bhagwan Parshvanath are captured, and the thousands of devotees are in front of the band singing Bhajan. This huge procession is running through the city’s main roads, which enables many devotees to see a glimpse of the holy Gods and find his blessing.
