Durga Puja events
It is a ten-day festival that begins on Mahalaya, the day the goddess Durga arrives on Earth. The day after is counted as the first day of Prothoma. The main celebrations typically start on the sixth day of this cycle, known as Shashthi.
There are several events associated with this puja; they are:
Bodhan
It’s the ritual of Goddess Durga’s awakening. This custom is believed to have originated with Lord Rama before his fight with Ravana. It’s also known as Akalbodhon and is performed on Shashti evening in all the puja mandaps.
Nabapatrika Snan
It happens on Saptami morning. A banana tree, mythically believed to be Lord Ganesha’s wife, is bathed. Before the ritual, the banana tree, or Kalabou, is decorated to resemble a married Bengali woman in a saree. This ritual is essentially for the good fortune of farmers, as it’s supposed to provide a healthy cropping season.
Sandhi Puja
The Sandhi puja is an important ritual of Durga Puja. It occurs at the end of Ashtami and the beginning of Nabami, i.e., at the sandhi, or intersection, of the two days. During this custom, it’s customary to offer 108 lotuses and light 108 candles for Goddess Durga.
Kumari Puja
In this custom, a little girl is dressed up as Goddess Durga and worshipped. According to religious experts, the young girl is treated as a human incarnation of the goddess. The sacred institution of Belur Math is the pioneer of this custom.
Sindur Khela
On the day of Bijoya Dashami, when it’s time to bid farewell, the women gear up for Sindur Khela. It signifies the glorified departure of Durga, with women applying sindoor, or vermillion, on the cheeks of other women.
Visarjan
Vijaya Dashami or Vissarjan is the last ritual of Durga Puja. Devi Durga is now returning to Kailasa. In India, idols are immersed in the holy Ganga.
