Sultanpur National Park, Gurugram Haryana, on Farukh Nagar road, established in 1972, was initially a wildlife bird sanctuary named after a Rajput king, Sultan Singh Chauhan. In July 1989, it was announced as a National Park. The famous bird sanctuary in India opens after 1.5 years.
I am sharing the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary Timings, Entry Fee, Safari, the best time to visit, animals, how to reach, and tour details in this article.
The king was a descendant of the great Prithviraj Chauhan. The park is in Sultanpur village, and the sanctuary is mainly centred on the Sultanpurjhil, which records many migratory birds yearly. Sultanpur National Park and Bird Sanctuary got the Ramsar tag of international importance in August 2021.

Sultanpur National Park History
In British India, Sultanpur was used as a salt manufacturing centre. In the 20th century, ornithologist Peter Michel Jackson first recognized Sultanpur as a bird centre. He used to be the honorary secretary of the Delhi Birdwatching Society and used his position to push the formation of the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary (Sultanpur Pakshi Vihar). After, It was discussed in the 1969 session of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
Thus, the preservation of Sultanpur Lake started, and they announced it as a bird sanctuary on April 2, 1971. The park’s status was promoted as a National Park in July 1991.
Today, its total area is over 359 acres. The national capital of Delhi is 34 km away from this Indian forest, resulting in many tourists visiting the park.

- The entry timing to Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary is from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Five hundred visitors are allowed in the park every day.
- It would be best if you came out before sunset.
- Visitors must fill out an entry form to enter the park.
- A photocopy of the self-attested ID proof is to be submitted.
- Visitors must bring original identification.
- The Sultanpur Sanctuary is closed on Tuesdays.
- Picnic inside the park is not allowed.

Sultanpur Wildlife Sanctuary entry fees
- To enter the park, Indians must pay 5 rupees per head, children between 5 to 12 years 2 rupees and foreigners 40 rupees per head.
- An extra fee of 25 rupees needs to be paid to enter with a still camera. The Permit for a video camera costs Rs 500.
- Parking charges 10 rupees for cars and scooters/Motorcycles 5 rupees.
- Insight the park you can avail batter operated car cost is 100 rupees per person, and the entire car is 4oo rupees.

Sultan National Park’s opening timing is from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM and is closed on Tuesdays. This sanctuary is open from October to April.

Sultanpur National Park is famous for which animals and birds?
Sultanpur Rashtriya Udyan is mainly known for the migratory birds that visit yearly, but the residential bird population is also quite impressive. Mynah, weaver bird, rock pigeon, magpie robin, kingfisher, bulbul, parakeet, etc., are common residential birds. Cormorant, black and grey francolin, stork, ibis, egret, Red-wattled Lapwing, shikra, Eurasian collared dove, and crested lark are more uncommon.
Migratory birds that can be frequently seen in winter are Sarus cranes, flamingos, ruff, greenshank, northern pintail, wagtail, northern shoveller, spot-billed pelican, gadwall, wood sandpiper, Eurasian wigeon, bluethroat, spotted redshank, starling, black-tailed godwit, etc.
Summer migratory birds are long-billed pipit, Asian Koel, herons, knob-billed duck, bee-eaters, etc.
Like Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Sultanpur National Park is mainly known for its bird populations. Some animals, like wild dogs, jungle cats, hedgehogs, porcupines, etc., are found here.
How to Reach Sultanpur National Park
- By train: Garhi Harsaru Junction Station is only 5.6 km from Sultanpur National Park. Among the major railway stations, Farukhnagar station is only 4 km away.
- By air: Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, is the nearest airport to the park at 35 km. You can book a cab or take any bus from here to reach the park.
- By metro: The closest metro station is Dwarka sector 21, 21 km from Sultanpur National Park.

Like Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary, Migratory birds come here from different parts of the world during winter. So November to February is the best time to visit Sultanpur National Park. The weather is soothing during this time, and we can see a maximum of birds.
4 Things to Do in Sultanpur National Park
- Bird-watching: With over 250 species of resident birds, Sultanpur is the best bird-watching site in Haryana. During winter, migratory birds are also here, and bird enthusiasts can expand their knowledge by visiting here.
- Photography: The colourful birds amid nature are a sight that beckons photographers from all around. Both still and video cameras are allowed inside after payment of a minimal fee.
- Visit Interpretation Center: This educational centre within the park premises has information about the different birds. A part of the Interpretation Center is dedicated to the research works of Birdman of India, Dr. Salim Ali. A library devoted to bird facts is also present here.
- Nature walk: A short walk through this park is a calming experience. Experiencing nature’s grandeur and bird sounds is an activity to look forward to. Safari is not available here.
Insight Sultanpur Forest – My Experience and Reviews
My trip to this national park started with a 1-hour drive from Delhi. After buying an entry ticket, I booked a battery car for 400 rupees (4 people) to tour the 3.5 km long route around Sultanpur Lake.
People can also walk this path according to their convenience. There are four watchtowers inside the park to see birds more clearly. The bird’s view from here is better during the early morning or sunset.
After entering the park, take the first right to reach the first observation centre. You can watch maximum birds from here. Don’t forget to bring a binocular or long-lens camera to catch a glimpse of the birds and animals here. Since it was wintertime, many birds, including the migratory ones, could be seen.
We hired a guide for Rs 500 who told us the names and unique facts about different birds for better information. The entire trip was filled with soothing bird sounds. The trip ended with spending time in the Interpretation Center, a beautiful bird library.
Tips For Visiting Sultanpur National Park
- Winter is the best time to see birds.
- A morning trip will allow you to see the maximum number of birds. Reach before 7 AM to have a fulfilling bird-watching session.
- Move quietly so the peace of the forest remains undisturbed.
- Carry binoculars for better vision.
- Keep your electronics switched off.
- Watch from a distance; don’t move closer to any bird or animal, or it will scare them away.
Flora and Fauna in Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary
The forest is mainly tropical-like Jim Corbett National Park, with predominant dry deciduous trees. Common trees of this region are Dhok, Khair, Tendu, Banyan, Neem, Jamun, Berberis, Babool, and Umbrella Thorn. Savannah grasses are also found.
The lake is home to aquatic vegetation. The forest department aims to make the area more fertile by artificially planting and nurturing other varieties of trees.

Gol Bavdi
Gol Bavdi is a historical site showcasing unique Indian architecture from the medieval era. It is a dried-up step well-built in the 18th century by the Nawabs of Farukhnagar. The distance from Sultanpur National Park is 7.5 km, and the place usually remains less crowded.
Leisure Valley Park
It’s a beautifully constructed public park in Sector 29 of Gurgaon, a half-hour drive from the national park. The park is an urban recreational centre with jogging paths, a decorative garden, a children’s playground, and musical fountains.
Sky Jumper Trampoline Park
SkyJumper Trampoline Park is a fun activity space 17 km from the national park. It’s an indoor amusement park with different varieties of trampolines. It is mainly popular amongst children, but people of all ages are allowed here. The park opens from 11:30 AM on weekdays and 10 AM on weekends.
Sheesh Mahal
The Sheesh Mahal was the residence of Faujdar Khan, the first Nawab of Farukhnagar. He built most of this area’s historical buildings and landmarks at the end of the Mughal era. The palace has a decorative ceiling covered by mirrors, which gave it its name, Sheesh or “Glass.” The distance between the palace and the national park is only 7.8 km.
Heritage Transport Museum Gurgaon
Tarun Thakral invent this museum. It’s India’s first transport museum. The museum shows how people were transported to an ancient era. Bullock-carts to scooters, you can see the transformation of the old vehicles to these day-updated ones. The Entry Fee is 300 rupees, and for children, it’s 150 rupees. The time is 10 am to 7 pm.
