Betla Palamau Tiger Reserve is India’s earliest tiger reserve, established in 1974. After 1986, the sanctuary was upgraded to Betla National Park. The world’s first tiger census began in the Betla National Park forest in 1932.
It’s a combination of the Palamu Tiger Reserve and the Mahuadar wolf sanctuary situated in Jharkhand. Betla’s historical significance lies in being the national park where the world’s first tiger census was conducted.

Betla National Park is 175 km from Ranchi via NH-39. The nearest airport is in Ranchi. Barwadih Junction is the nearest rail station, 15 km away.
The distance to Daltonganj railway station is 24 km, and to Ranchi, 173 km. If you go by road (the distance from Kalyani is 545 km), the road from Hazaribagh goes to Betla, about 180 km. (Google Maps is reliable enough.)

The total safari cost is 1200 rupees for six people with a guide to enter the jungle.
- The entry fee for Indians is 300 rupees for 1 hour, and for foreigners, it’s 500 rupees.
- The parking maintenance fee is 100 rupees
- The vehicle fee is 650 rupees per hour.
- The guide cost is 150 rupees.
- The camera fee is 100 rupees.
- The elephant safari costs 400 rupees.
Note: The vehicle fee will not be charged if you have your car.
