Dakshineswar is renowned for its famous Dakshina Kali temple. Rani Rashmoni of Janbazar was ordered in her dreams to construct a Kali Temple when she went to Kasha after her husband died. At the cost of Rs 9 lakh, the temple was built(1847 to 1855).
In the main Nabaratna temple, the deity of goddess Kali is standing on the chest of Lord Shiva, lying on a silver lotus with 1000 petals. The idol has been made by carving a single stone. There are twelve Shiva temples and one Lakshmi Narayan temple along the bank of the Ganga. Panchabati (Aswathha, Bel, Bat, Asok, Amlaki) is serene and peaceful in place.
As a woman built the temple from a lower caste, the Brahmins boycotted worship ceremonies in the temple. Then, at last, Gadadhar Chattopadhyay from Kamarpukur agreed to work as a priest in the temple. Over time, Gadhadhar became the great sage Ramakrishna Paramhansadeva.
The activities of Ramakrishna remain associated with this Kali Temple of Dakshineswar. He also lived in a northwest room of the temple premises. This room, even today, is crowded with devotees. Kalpataru Utsav is a unique festival in Dakshineswar that happened on 1 January.
