Dakshineswar is one of the West Bengal tourist places renowned for its famous Dakshina kali temple. Rani Rashmoni of Janbazar was ordered in her dreams to construct a Kali Temple when she was going to kasha after her husband died. At the cost of Rs 9 lakh, the temple was built(1847 to 1855).
In the main Nabaratna temple, the deity of goddess Kali is standing on the chest of Lord Shiva, lying on a silver lotus having 1000 petals. The idol has been made by carving a single stone. There are twelve Shiva temples and one Lakshmi Narayan temple along the bank of Ganga. Panchabati (Aswathha, Bel, Bat, Asok, Amlaki) is serene and peaceful in place.
As a woman built the temple from a lower caste, the Brahmins boycotted worship ceremonies in the temple. Then, at last, Gadadhar Chattopadhyay from Kamarpukur agreed to work as a priest in the temple. Over time, Gadhadhar became the great sage Ramakrishna Paramhansadeva.
