In 2006, the estimated population of the continent was about 52 crores. North America is the 3rd largest continent after Asia and Africa and the 4th largest continent after Asia, Africa, and Europe.
South America is the fourth largest continent in the world. The continent covers 1,8,20,900 square kilometers, which is 12% of the earth’s total land area. In terms of size, it is second only to Asia, Africa, and North America. It extends across the two sides of the equator and Capricorn.
The continent is linked to Central and North America by the Panama Canal to the north. The length is 6,400 km from the Caribbean Sea north to the Horn Peninsula in the south. Its maximum length from east to west is 5,160 kilometers, from Punta du Seixas in Brazil on the Atlantic coast to Punta Perinas in Peru on the Pacific coast.
